What is Venetian plaster?

Venetian plaster (in Italian, marmorino and stucco veneziano) is a wall finish made from slaked lime and finely ground marble. It has been used in Italy since Roman times and was perfected in Venice during the Renaissance. Applied in multiple ultra-thin coats and then burnished with a steel trowel, it develops a luminous, polished surface with the cool depth of real stone — because, in effect, it is stone, rebuilt on your wall.

Because the color is built from mineral pigment inside the plaster rather than painted on top, a Venetian plaster wall has a sense of depth that seems to glow from within. No two walls are ever identical; each carries the subtle movement of the craftsman’s hand.

Where Venetian plaster works best

Feature & accent walls

A single Venetian plaster wall behind a bed, sofa or fireplace becomes the focal point of the whole room.

Entryways & stairwells

The shifting sheen rewards tall walls and changing light, making a dramatic first impression.

Powder rooms

Sealed Venetian plaster brings a jewel-box richness to small, high-impact spaces.

Our Venetian plaster process

  • Substrate is skim-coated smooth and primed — Venetian plaster is unforgiving of a poor base, so this stage is everything.
  • A tinted base coat establishes the ground color.
  • Two to three burnished coats of lime-and-marble plaster are troweled on, each polished as it sets to build depth and sheen.
  • A final burnish brings up the signature marble-like luster; an optional wax adds water resistance and a deeper glow.

The finish can be tuned from a soft satin to a high, reflective polish — we match it to your room and the look you are after.

Frequently asked questions

How much does Venetian plaster cost?

Authentic hand-burnished Venetian plaster typically runs $15 to $30 per square foot installed in Pennsylvania, depending on the number of coats, sheen and wall condition. A single accent wall is often the most cost-effective way to get the look.

How durable is Venetian plaster?

Very. Once cured and sealed, it is harder than paint, will not peel, and can last decades. Minor marks can usually be burnished out rather than repainted. In bathrooms or high-traffic areas we add a protective wax or sealer.

Is Venetian plaster waterproof?

When sealed with the correct wax or topcoat it is highly water-resistant and suitable for powder rooms and splash areas. For showers and wet rooms we recommend Tadelakt or sealed microcement instead.

Can you match a specific color?

Yes. The plaster is tinted with mineral pigments and we can match it closely to a paint color, a fabric or a stone sample. We always leave physical samples before starting.
