What Is Tadelakt? The Waterproof Moroccan Plaster

Tadelakt is a traditional Moroccan lime plaster that is polished with a stone and cured with natural soap to become seamless and waterproof. For centuries it has lined the steam rooms of Moroccan hammams — and today it makes some of the most beautiful, grout-free showers and wet rooms you can build.

How Tadelakt becomes waterproof

The magic is chemistry. Tadelakt is made from lime plaster that is compressed and burnished with a smooth river stone, then treated with a natural olive-oil soap called savon noir. The soap reacts with the lime to form a water-repellent layer, sealing the surface without any plastic membrane or grout lines.

The result is a continuous, slightly undulating surface with a soft sheen and remarkable depth — and one that sheds water, which is why it has been used in bathhouses for generations.

Its waterproof, seamless nature makes it ideal for the wettest, most demanding rooms:
